Social Skills Groups
Enhancing social communication & confidence
Social skills groups focus on communication, understanding, and confidence through games, discussion, role play, and video modeling. Children work in the KCC's sensory gym for part of the time, giving them the opportunity to practice what they learned in a spontaneous, less-structured (but very fun!) environment.
Participation in social skills groups may be helpful for children whose relationships are hampered by issues related to ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, social anxiety, learning challenges, language delays, and auditory processing disorders.
- Groups meet once a week on Saturdays for 60-minute sessions
- Children are grouped by age and developmental level
- Groups are limited to 6 children
Groups help children who…
- Feel different and do not feel okay about that
- Have trouble keeping up with the fast-paced social interactions of their peers due to processing or language delays
- Have difficulty making and keeping friends due to emotional outbursts or meltdowns
- Misinterpret social cues and scare away potential friends
- Have trouble holding conversations
- Feel rejected by peers and don’t know why
- Have difficulty sharing and taking turns
- Are shy, unassertive and vulnerable to getting picked on
- Are lonely
Our social skills groups are ofered by Diane Nancarrow, MA, CCC-SLP, speech-language pathologist and the KCC's director of adolescent programs. She specializes in the pragmatics of language and in auditory processing.
