The Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol
The heart of all we do at the KCC
The Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP) is the method at the heart of all of the KCC’s speech and language programs. It is a treatment approach for children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), other speech sound disorders, and expressive language challenges. The K-SLP focuses upon the child’s motor-speech skills, shaping the consonants, vowels and syllable shapes/gestures from what they are capable of producing toward higher levels of motor-speech coordination, giving them a functional avenue by which to become an effective vocal communicator.
K-SLP Treatment Materials
The K-SLP treatment materials began with the Kaufman Speech Praxis Test, through which speech-language pathologists can take data through imitation of which vowels, consonants, and syllable shapes are within the child’s repertoire, and to provide a systematic plan of care.
The additional materials help those with CAS combine vowels and consonants to form the simple syllable shapes, and progress on to more complex words and to combine words to formulate expressive language for effective vocal/verbal communication.

Distance Services from Nancy Kaufman
Nancy enjoys working with children on a regular, ongoing basis, but that is often difficult for families who live a great distance from the KCC. Instead, we offer two alternative options:
VIDEO CONSULTATION – Nancy will watch a short video of your child, assess their current skills, then call you to discuss treatment goals, methods, and specific suggestions to help with your child’s progress.
SPEAK INTENSIVE – Parents are invited to bring their children to the KCC for short but intensive visits (usually 2-3 days). Nancy will evaluate children face-to-face, determine goals, and demonstrate K-SLP techniques. A video consultation is required before the intensive can be scheduled.
Click on an option for more information. Feel free to email Cyndi Davis, the KCC's community outreach coordinator, with any questions.
